‘World’s Largest Truck Convoy’ to travel through Henrico Saturday

The Virginia State Police will participate in the fifth-annual "World’s Largest Truck Convoy" for Special Olympics Saturday, Oct. 10. The convoy will start at 10 a.m. from Meadow Event Park in Doswell and end at 11:30 a.m. back at the park.

Motorists are advised to expect delays from the Meadow Event Park along Route 30 to Interstate 95 southbound between Doswell and Exit 84B, and along Interstate 295 northbound to Interstate 64 eastbound to Bryan Park and Interstate 95 northbound, ending at the Meadow Event Park. > Read more.

Academy at Virginia Randolph to celebrate school’s centennial Oct. 17

The Academy at Virginia Randolph will celebrate its centennial Oct. 17, marking a century since the Henrico County school was dedicated in honor of the pioneering educator.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, 2204 Mountain Road in Glen Allen. It will feature a presentation from a historian with an interest in Randolph, and remarks from a representative of the Capitol Foundation, which is leading fundraising efforts for a women’s monument on the Virginia capitol
grounds. The monument will include Randolph as one of 12 featured women from Virginia history. The celebration will also have music, food, drinks and games. Each of the school’s trade instructors will have a booth with information and activities about the field they teach. > Read more.

Commonwealth Commercial, a commercial real estate firm headquartered in Glen Allen, recently earned the Accredited Management Organization designation from the Institute of Real Estate Management, an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors. Currently there are only 535 management companies in the United States and Canada that have achieved the AMO designation. Firms that earn it must demonstrate the highest standards in professional service, financial stability and accountability, and have a certified property manager directing and supervising the real estate management team. In addition, AMO firms also must abide by the rigorous AMO Code of Professional Ethics that is strictly enforced by the institute. School Board approves stricter GPA standards for high school athletes

UPDATE: FEB. 14, 4:46 PM – The Henrico County School Board today voted 4-1 to adopt stricter academic standards for high school athletes, requiring that they maintain 2.0 grade point averages in order to play school-sanctioned sports beginning in the 2013-14 school year.

Three Chopt District representative Diana Winston voted against the item on a technicality, arguing that the standards should have been adopted as new School Board policy rather than merely as updated school system regulations. But she said she strongly supported the tougher standards.

Suspects sought in Short Pump robbery

On Feb. 9, 2013 at about 10:40 p.m., two 16 year old males were walking across a parking lot in the 11650 block of West Broad Street when they were approached by two suspects, a black female and a black male. The suspects displayed a handgun and demanded items from the victims. Both victims gave the suspects various personal items to include cash. The suspects were last seen walking on foot.

Shortly before the robbery, the suspects were seen in a convenience store in the area. The male suspect (pictured) was wearing a green and yellow baseball cap. > Read more.

10k preparation aids in family fitness

As preparations gear up for the 14th annual Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k, there seems to be news about 10k sign-ups (which recently set a record for single-day registration), training teams, contests and charity promotions at every turn.

More cyclists on the way

Riders to pass through county on East Coast Greenway tour
From October 4-9, 35 cyclists will be riding through Henrico County as part of a 325-mile tour of the East Coast Greenway (ECG) route from Fredericksburg, Virginia, to Raleigh, NC.

A 2,900-mile trail route that extends from the Canadian border at Calais, Maine, to Key West, Florida, The East Coast Greenway is heading into its 25th year. The Week A Year (WAY) Tour is an annual ride and fundraiser that has been working its way south since the first WAY Tour launched from Calais, Maine in 2011. Riders cover a different section of the Greenway each year and are on target to complete the route in Key West in 2019. > Read more.

Henrico woman wins $1M in Va. Lottery game

When Amanda Spiller of Henrico saw that she’d won the $1 million prize in the Virginia Lottery’s $100 Million Cash Extravaganza game, it didn’t immediately sink in.

“I was in shock. . . complete shock,” she said. “I had to double and triple check.”

She bought the winning ticket at the 7-Eleven at 2750 Hungary Spring Road in Henrico. She had the choice of taking the full $1 million prize over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $681,000 before taxes. She chose the cash option. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket. > Read more.
