Glen Allen mother earns $7K ‘Parentpreneur’ grant


A Glen Allen mother and entrepreneur recently earned a $7,000 grant from The First Years, a juvenile products manufacturer, to help make her childhood clothing invention a reality.

Casey Bunn, who has two children (three-year-old Jillian and one-year-old Charlie) created Handsocks to solve a problem – the need for long, cozy, sock-like mittens that keep babies and older children warm while also providing protection from scratches and skin conditions. > Read more.

Henricopolis SWCD honors its stars at Assemblage


A century or so ago, Henrico County was known as the Dairy County of Virginia, and one of the largest dairy operations was centered at the Dorey family's barn in Varina.

On Jan. 7, the barn – now the site of the Dorey Park Recreation Center – was transformed into an art gallery, and its rafters hung with colorful student art work depicting nature scenes. > Read more.

SR-71 moving from Virginia Aviation Museum


One of the most visible exhibits at the Virginia Aviation Museum in Sandston is on its way to a new home.

The world’s fastest and highest flying production aircraft, the SR-71 Blackbird, is preparing to move from the museum to the Science Museum of Virginia. The iconic, supersonic stealth plane will become the focal point of the SMVs new exhibition gallery, Speed, opening later this year.

Before traveling to its new home, the Blackbird will be disassembled and packaged by experts from Worldwide Aircraft Recovery and W.M. Jordan Company. > Read more.

MADD Virginia to host Candlelight Vigil of Remembrance and Hope at Lewis Ginter


Mothers Against Drunk Driving Virginia, will host its annual Candlelight Vigil of Remembrance and Hope Nov. 23 at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Avenue, to remember lives lost and lives changed forever by impaired driving and to help mobilize the community to assist MADD with its efforts to stop impaired driving.

Henrico government-related Thanksgiving closures

Henrico County general government offices and courts will be closed Thursday, Nov. 26 and Friday, Nov. 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Refuse will not be collected Thursday, Nov. 26. Pickup will be delayed one day, with Friday routes scheduled for pick up on Saturday. Public use areas will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. > Read more.

Four Henrico teachers recognized with R.E.B. awards


Four Henrico County teachers were among 34 finalists for the 2015 R.E.B. Awards for Teaching Excellence recognized recently by The Community Foundation and the R.E.B. Foundation.

Selected from 102 teachers nominated by students, parents and colleagues, the 16 winners and 18 finalists are considered among the best in their field and will receive cash grants totaling $185,100. > Read more.

Architect of World Trade Center Memorial to speak in Henrico


Michael Arad, the architect of the World Trade Center Memorial, will be the keynote speaker for The 2016 Adolf-Adams JCC Forum on Sat., Jan. 30, 2016 at 7:30 p.m., at the Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community Center in Henrico.

Arad’s “Reflecting Absence” architectural design was selected from more than 5,000 competitive entries as the template for the Memorial’s construction in New York City. During the forum, Arad will discuss the significance and symbolism of the design, as well as his inspiration. The event, which is a highlight of the Weinstein JCC’s Patron of the Arts series, is open to the public > Read more.

Environmental Film Festival planned for February


The Sixth Annual RVA Environmental Film Festival (RVA EFF) will be held Feb. 1-7, 2016 at various locations, including in Henrico County.

A partnership of The Enrichmond Foundation, Capital Region Land Conservancy, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and Falls of the James Group - Sierra Club, the festival will feature a number of insightful films designed to raise awareness of environmental issues relative to all residents of the planet and Richmond citizens in particular.

A detailed schedule will be released at a time closer to the festival, but the popular children's portion has been set for Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Byrd Theatre in Carytown. > Read more.
