Sandston Memorial Day Parade to return for eighth year May 30


The Eighth Annual American Legion Post 242 & Battlefield Post 144 Sandston Memorial Day Parade will start May 30 at 1 p.m. at Seven Pines Elementary School on Beulah Road and proceed down Williamsburg Road through Sandston to Confederate Avenue. It will be preceded at noon by a veterans’ recognition ceremony at Seven Pines National Cemetery in Sandston.

Post-parade festivities will include live music, children’s activities, food and exhibitor booths. This year’s theme is “Honoring Our Navy Veterans.” > Read more.

Freeman students learn to ‘Drive Smart’


Students signed a banner pledging not to text and drive during a Drive Smart Virginia event at Freeman High School May 26. The event helped show students the dangers of driving while distracted or intoxicated.

Henrico Police arrest and charge man in Mar. 10 homicide


Henrico Police arrested and charged 25-year-old Anton Lateef Edwards of Bowling Green with first-degree murder in the Mar. 10 shooting death of a 23-year-old Virginia Beach man in northern Henrico. Edwards also was charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by convicted felon.

At approximately 12:15 a.m., Mar. 10, Henrico Police were flagged down by a citizen near the intersection of Alma Avenue and East Laburnum Avenue who informed them that a male had been shot in the area of Alma Avenue. > Read more.

Fire in Henrico’s West End extinguished quickly


APR. 4, 5:15 P.M. – No one was injured during a fire at a West End apartment complex Monday afternoon.

Henrico County Division of Fire units responded to the 9100 block of Cloisters East for the report of an apartment fire at 3:17 p.m. First units arrived and found smoke coming from the eaves and rear of a two-story apartment complex. A fire was located on the outside of the front of the building, and firefighters brought it under control quickly, by 3:36 p.m. The fire appeared to have been caused by smoking materials improperly discarded in the mulch in front of the apartment, officials said. > Read more.

Fairfield meeting April 11 to celebrate new Police station, chief’s service


Fairfield District Supervisor Frank J. Thornton will hold a constituent meeting Monday, April 11 to dedicate the Henrico County Police Division’s Villa Park Station and to celebrate the service of Police Chief Douglas A. Middleton.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Villa Park Station, 7850 Villa Park Drive.

The Villa Park Station opened in July to provide a permanent base of operations for the division’s coverage of central Henrico. Middleton joined the agency as a police officer in 1972 and became chief in 2011. > Read more.

19th Annual Asian American Celebration planned May 21

The Asian American Society of Central Virginia will hold its 19th Annual Asian American Celebration on Saturday, May 21 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, 403 N. 3rd St. in Richmond, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.

The theme for this year’s celebration will be “Our Heritage," in recognition of May as the Asian Pacific American Heritage month, designated by the U.S. Congress in 1992. > Read more.

Sandston Founders Club honors Sydnor


The Founders Club of Sandston presented lifetime membership to Charles W. Sydnor at its 12th annual meeting last month.

Sydnor, who grew up in Sandston and later served as president of Emory and Henry College for eight years, was honored by Founder Club President Alice Taylor Baldwin at the April 23 event at Sandston Memorial Recreation Center. > Read more.
