‘Run 2 Rebuild Richmond’ scheduled at River Road UMC Oct. 1

Event to benefit low-income homeowners

River Road United Methodist Church will host its fifth Run 2 Rebuild Richmond Saturday, Oct. 1 to raise money for Rebuilding Together Richmond.

The event will include a 5K run/walk, a one-mile “Fun Run” and a wellness fair. Event proceeds will benefit Rebuilding Together Richmond, a local non-profit that brings volunteers together to repair the homes of low-income homeowners. > Read more.

Eastern Henrico crash kills Richmond man

Driver arrested on DUI charge

An early morning single-vehicle crash in Eastern Henrico Sunday killed a 34-year-old Richmond man, and Henrico Police arrested the vehicle's driver and charged her with driving under the influence.

At 2:46 a.m. Sept. 25, Henrico Police and Fire personnel responded to Osborne Turnpike near the intersection of River Bend Estates Drive for a single vehicle accident.

A Chevrolet van was traveling west on Osborne Turnpike when it ran off of the right side of the roadway and into a ditch. > Read more.

Henrico libraries to host ‘death cafes’


The Henrico County Public Library system will host three "death cafés" – gatherings during which attendees can discuss death and dying in what the library terms "surprisingly upbeat and informative guided discussions" led by spiritual and bereavement counselor Alane Miles.

The events will provide attendees the opportunity to ask any and all questions about the topics of death, dying, grief and funeral practices, in an informal setting. Miles has 20 years of experience in the hospice field, hosts the Death Club Radio show on WRIR and writes for Style Weekly. Registration is not required. > Read more.

Henrico Schools seeks substitute teachers, clerical workers, nurses

Henrico County Public Schools is seeking substitutes for teachers, clerical workers, nurses, school security personnel, alternative ed technicians and instructional assistants. Members of the HCPS Human Resources Department will be at the Eastern Henrico Government Center, 3820 Nine Mile Road, from 9 a.m. to noon July 20 to talk with interested candidates.

Substitute teacher candidates must have a four-year college degree and be at least 19. Candidates for substitutes for clerical workers, school security staff members, alternative ed technicians and instructional assistants must have a high school diploma or GED. Substitutes for nurses must have a nursing degree (RN or LPN) and a current license, as well as CPR/AED and first aid certification cards. > Read more.

National Night Out planned Aug. 2

Henrico Police to visit more than 70 neighborhood events
Henrico County Police officials plan to visit more than 70 neighborhoods throughout the county as part of the 33rd annual National Night Out Tuesday, Aug. 2.

Police Chief Humberto I. Cardounel, Jr. and his staff, as well as Henrico Police officers and many county officials, will visit citizens to help strengthen police-citizen partnerships. Cardounel will start by visiting the Richmond International Raceway NNO event at 4:30 p.m. Dozens of other events throughout the county will continue until about 9:30 p.m., featuring cookouts, block parties, ice-cream socials and parades. Homeowners in neighborhoods that do not have events scheduled may show their support by putting on porch lights.

Publix to purchase 7 of 8 Henrico Martin’s stores

Florida grocer previously announced plans to build new Henrico store
JULY 13 – Florida-based Publix will acquire 10 of 19 Martin’s stores in the Metro Richmond area – including all but one of the Henrico stores – the company announced tonight.

The parent company of Martin’s and Giant, Ahold USA Inc., is selling the stores to satisfy Federal Trade Commission requirements related to its pending merger with Food Lion parent company Delhaize Group.

The Henrico stores to be purchased by Publix, pending FTC approval, are located at:
