New laws impact alcohol sales and consumption in Virginia


A number of new laws affecting the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control will take effect July 1. The laws were passed by this year's General Assembly and signed by Governor Terry McAuliffe.

House Bill 2029 and Senate Bill 1448 simplifies rules for Virginia distilleries at festivals and gives opportunities for them to distribute their products at licensed events by allowing additional locations for a distillery store to participate in events or festivals throughout the state conducted for the purpose of featuring and educating the consuming public about their products.

USDA encourages use of food thermometers for safe summer cooking


As the summer season brings cook outs and barbecues to full swing, consumers buy more meat and poultry to grill up for families and friends. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service is reminding consumers to keep their summer free from food-borne illness by using food thermometers to check that all meat and poultry is fully cooked at the right internal temperature.

‘Taste of Virginia’ returning to Innsbrook Pavilion July 1

Innsbrook's second-annual 'Taste of Virginia' festival, hosted July 1 at the Innsbrook Pavilion by the Innsbrook Foundation and the Innsbrook Rotary, will be a culinary event full of everything delicious that Virginia has to offer.

The festival, presented by Capital Ale House, will showcase food from local restaurants, as restaurants compete in a Whole Foods Market culinary competition for the “Taste of Virginia” title.

Home School Day at Henricus Historical Park will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students ages 4-14 will work with colonists as they set up their militia, economy and way of life in the re-created colonial citie. Students will also learn how the native inhabitants, the Powhatan Indians, organized their successful and widespread society.
