‘Top Chef’ finalist to open Willow Lawn restaurant

A finalist in the Bravo television show Top Chef is bringing one of his four restaurant chains to Henrico County.

Bryan Voltaggio, who was the runner-up of the sixth season of Top Chef, (finishing second to his brother, Michael) and his business partner, Hilda Staples, will open their third Family Meal restaurant, at Henrico's Willow Lawn shopping center. The restaurant is expected to open early next year.

Voltaggio, a native of Frederick, Md., also was a runner-up on the fifth season of Top Chef Masters on Bravo.

Family Meal will be open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and will offer modern twists on American classics, according to company officials.

Crowd favorites of the first Family Meal (located in Voltaggio's hometown) include hoecakes with pimento cheese, maple bacon jam and pickle relish; fried chicken served with buttermilk biscuits, pickles and hot sauce; and softshell crab sandwich with smoked crab, John Cope’s corn, tomato, and bacon.

"My family frequently visits Family Meal in Frederick, and I wanted to bring that same place to the Richmond community,” said Voltaggio. “The full-service diner concept lends itself to local families, working professionals, visitors alike, and we’re looking forward to offering homemade, high-quality, food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at The Shops at Willow Lawn.”

Staples became acquainted with the Richmond region through her husband, who was born and raised in the city.

“Although a big city, Richmond still has that small town feel that we love about Frederick, our hometown,” Staples said. “Having visited for most holiday family gatherings, I knew Richmond would be a great location for our more casual restaurant concept.”
