CSz Richmond, an improvisational comedy theater in Henrico's West End, has reorganized and is now operating as an independent nonprofit known as Yes Balloon. As such, the organization will organize and produce all shows and educational programs held at its locatioat 8906-H West Broad Street, in the Gold's Gym Plaza. The programs will continue to operate under the CSz Richmond name.

“Improvisation is more than a performance,” said Christine Walters, the original founder of ComedySportz Richmond. “Education has always been a hallmark of the work we do. Improv builds integral skills in communication, social dynamics, problem solving, and storytelling. Whether we are working with high school students, corporate CEOs, or students with sensory impairments, we can use improv to make the world a better place.”

The focus on education and human development is one of the primary forces that led to the CSz Richmond Theater’s reorganization as a nonprofit entity. While the group will continue to provide a variety of weekly performances, including ComedySportz, Solo Cup and Improv Arena, the theater plans to use funding from individual donations and grants to subsidize opportunities such as scholarships, educational programs, and special performances for unique groups.

“One of our most exciting new developments is a sensory friendly ComedySportz show specifically designed for individuals with autism or other sensory needs,” said Dave Gau, CSz Richmond’s artistic director and president of the Yes Balloon Board of Directors. The first sensory friendly performance, scheduled for Nov. 11, will feature raised lights, wider spaces between seats and an opportunity for theater patrons to move about the space during the performance.

“To accommodate these families, we want to keep the theater less crowded and provide tickets at a reduced cost. Financial support through Yes Balloon can help us provide these opportunities for everyone,” he said.
