Lewis Ginter to host Fall PlantFest Sept. 15-16


Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s Fall PlantFest plant sale will take place Friday, Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Forty-two vendors will offer a variety of plants and garden/nature-related items for sale. Local Master Gardeners and volunteers also will be available to offer suggestions and answer questions.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden up for national award


Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is in the running for USA Today’s contest for the nation’s "Favorite Botanical Garden." The garden is one of only 20 nationally to be nominated. Voting ends March 28 at noon, and the winner will be announced April 1. Daily voting is open at http://bit.ly/BESTgarden.

In 2014, Lewis Ginter voted into the number two spot in a similar USA Today 10Best Reader’s Choice contest for the 10 Best Public Gardens.

With more than 386,000 visitors last year, the garden educates more than 12,000 schoolchildren annually, including a quarter from low to moderate income households participating at no charge; grows more than 10,000 pounds of fresh produce annually to feed the hungry; and contributes to community public greening initiatives supporting the economy and enhancing quality of life.

‘Howl-o-ween’ to benefit Pawssible


Pawssible, a nonprofit organization that provides advocacy, resources and education for people who want a service dog, and Carytown Burgers and Fries are partnering for "Howl-o-ween" Oct. 31. All three Carytwon Burgers and Fries locations, including those in Lakeside (5404 Lakeside Avenue) and Short Pump (200 Towne Center West), will donate a portion of all sales that day to Pawssible.

‘Pink-shirt quilt’ to be raffled off in Breast Cancer Foundation fundraiser


Quilting Adventures in Lakeside is pairing with the Central Virginia Modern Quilt Guild to help raise money for the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation through a raffle. The prize is a pink shirt quilt made by members of the Guild. Tickets for the quilt are a donation of $5 or more for the Foundation. Presentation on native plant partnership takes place Oct. 1


Carol Heiser from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries will discuss the Virginia Native Plant Marketing Partnership Thursday, October 1, at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Avenue. The monthly meeting of the Pocahontas Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society begins at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public; doors open at 6:30 p.m., and all are invited to come early and get to know others with similar interests. A short business meeting will follow the presentation.

In her role as Wildlife Habitat Coordinator for DGIF, Heiser has helped lead the agency’s efforts to enhance wildlife habitat by encouraging corporate landowners, private landowners, schools and homeowners to improve environments in their communities to benefit Virginia's songbirds, mammals, amphibians and other wildlife.

Lakeside passports offer UCI race attendees discounts at Lewis Ginter


Spectators who attend the UCI race can score discounts at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden by completing a Lakeside passport.

The Garden will offer a buy-one, get-one-free admission offer to all patrons who bring a completed passport to the Garden's admissions desk between Sept. 19-27. To receive a passport, visit participating Lakeside businesses or visit https://www.facebook.com/Lakeside-Avenue-104727612962395/timeline/ to download and print one. Visitors must collect a stamp from a business in each of five zones along Lakeside Avenue, then present the completed passport at Lewis Ginter. No purchase is necessary.

Companion Extraordinaire to honor veterans May 14

Companion Extraordinaire Home Care and Skilled Services will be honoring veterans and current military members May 14 at 11 a.m. The event will take place at 5311 Lakeside Avenue.

Companion Extraordinaire dedicated a hall in its new Lakeside office as a “Wall of Honor” and will be presenting 13 military service men and women with certificates as well as placing their service photos on the wall.

Local couple wins wedding at Lewis Ginter


Richmonders Jim Morgan and Dan Stackhouse were married at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Lakeside Mar. 7 month after winning the Say I Do! With OutRVA wedding contest in February. The contest was open to LGBT couples in recognition of Virginia’s marriage equality law, which took effect last fall. The wedding included a package valued at $25,000.

Morgan and Stackhouse, who became engaged last fall on the day marriage equality became the law in Virginia, have been together for 16 years. They were selected from among 40 couples who registered for the contest. The winners were announced at the Say I Do! Dessert Soiree at the Renaissance in Richmond in February.

Author, child abuse survivor to speak at Henrico event

To help celebrate twenty years of service to advocating for abused and neglected children in Henrico County, Henrico Court Appointed Special Advocates, Inc. (CASA) will host an evening with bestselling author K.L. Randis on Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Belmont Recreation Center in Lakeside.

Randis is best known for her bestselling novel, Spilled Milk, which tells her painful – but ultimately triumphant – personal story of abuse and of child abuse prevention. The book is her first novel.
