A Glen Allen woman recently began raising an assistance dog in-training for Canine Companions for Independence, a national non-profit organization that provides assistance dogs for children, adults and veterans with disabilities.

Regency Square Farmers Market opens


Regency Square shopping center this week opened a farmers market that will operate weekly on the site. The center joined with Grow RVA to bring the first-ever such market to the facility.

The market will be held Mondays through Aug. 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., weather permitting, in the parking lot on the Quioccasin Road side of the center.

Approximately, 15-20 vendors will sell a mixture of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, fresh eggs, baked and canned goods.

The Pemberton at University Park to host ‘Wall of Honor’ ceremony June 9


The Pemberton at University Park senior community will host a dedication ceremony for its Veterans Wall of Honor June 9 at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony will honor residents who have served in the military.

Deep Run High School Cadets will provide a color guard for the event.

Community members have taken photos of residents in uniform, as well as residents with pictures of their military units from their days of service that will be on display the day of the event.

FamFest planned for April 9


Henrico's Division of Recreation & Parks will host FamFest from 1 p.m. 4 p.m. Saturday, April 9 at Deep Run Park.

The family event will begin with a giant ball drop and will feature colossal obstacle courses and mega-moon bounces as well as family "minute to win it" games and friendly competitions. Watch as the nationally-renowned Air Elite Dunkers leap their way into spring in the gym or get your groove on with music from Trademark or the dance troupe Future Shock.

Henrico woman is weight-loss finalist


Glen Allen resident Myra Hartsell is a finalist in the Medi-Weightloss 2016 Transformation Vacation Giveaway, an annual contest that allows patients from more than 80 locations throughout the country to submit their "before" and "after" pictures, along with an inspirational story describing their weight loss journey.

The top 10 finalists were selected from nearly 50 entries nationwide based not only on their successful weight loss, but also on the motivational aspect of their personal transformation.

Hartsell's entry described how she hit "rock bottom" in July 2014 after the death of her mother, then became an empty-nester when her twins started college.

Architect of World Trade Center Memorial to speak in Henrico


Michael Arad, the architect of the World Trade Center Memorial, will be the keynote speaker for The 2016 Adolf-Adams JCC Forum on Sat., Jan. 30, 2016 at 7:30 p.m., at the Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community Center in Henrico.

Arad’s “Reflecting Absence” architectural design was selected from more than 5,000 competitive entries as the template for the Memorial’s construction in New York City. During the forum, Arad will discuss the significance and symbolism of the design, as well as his inspiration. The event, which is a highlight of the Weinstein JCC’s Patron of the Arts series, is open to the public

Western Henrico Rotary Club makes Thanksgiving donation to Coal Pit families


Members of the Western Henrico Rotary Club (WHRC) celebrated Thanksgiving a few days early on Nov. 23, making their annual donation of turkey dinners to 28 Coal Pit Learning Center families.

Among the WHRC members who visited Coal Pit for the giveway were Clint Ray and Lila Marcela Waggoner, pictured with 3-year-old Emily and 4-year-old Jaeda.

‘Caring Santa’ to visit special-needs children at VCC


'Caring Santa' will visit with children with special needs, and their families, at Virginia Center Commons shopping center in Glen Allen Sunday, Dec. 6, from 8:30 am. to 10:30 a.m. The visit will be held in a sensory friendly environment, and families will not have to wait in line but will sign in and be called when it is their turn.

Caring Santa events have expanded from seven Simon malls in 2011 to more than 100 Simon malls. In 2013, Simon and The Noerr Programs were honored by Community Gatepath, earning a Community Impact Award for their efforts in pioneering Caring Santa.

Local puppy trainers raise canine helper for Virginia woman


A puppy-raising family from Glen Allen has been credited with helping Canine Companions for Independence provide an assistance dog for Madisyn Hess of McGaheysville, Virginia.

Canine Companions for Independence, a national non-profit organization that provides assistance dogs for children and adults with disabilities, recently matched Madisyn with Oxford, a two-year-old Labrador/golden retriever cross who has been trained to respond to more than 40 advanced commands. Oxford can turn light switches on and off, open and close doors and retrieve dropped objects. One of his most important jobs, however, is to provide constant companionship for Madisyn.
