A Glen Allen woman recently began raising an assistance dog in-training for Canine Companions for Independence, a national non-profit organization that provides assistance dogs for children, adults and veterans with disabilities.

Children perform during the India Spring Fest, held April 27-28 at the Hindu Center in Glen Allen. The event featured traditional Indian food, shopping and entertainment for children and adults.

Spirit of Habitat

Spirited Art Richmond held a painting class May 5 for Hanover Habitat for Humanity families to paint their own artwork as a final touch for their new homes. Among first-time homeowners painting The Klimt Circle tree (which doubles as a ‘family tree’) were (left to right) Janet Payne, Gwen Stockman of Hanover Habitat and Payne’s daughter, Ashley Payne. Spirited Art is located in Short Pump at West Broad Village.

DRMD hopes to hit million-dollar mark

Deep Run High School’s 2013 Marathon Dance, a student-run function that aims to raise money for organizations around the community, will be held March 15-16 in the school’s gymnasium. In its seven-year history, the dance has raised more than $863,000, and this year the students’ goal is to break the $1 million mark. The event has progressed from a small dance in the high school gym to an event that brings the entire community together.

Seeing red

It was a red-out in the nurseries of Bon Secours hospitals Feb. 1, as all the babies were dressed in red knit caps and blankets as part of National Wear Red Day to kick off American Heart Month. At right, St. Mary's Hospital CEO Toni Ardabell holds one of the newborns at that hospital. Each of the knit caps worn by the infants was knitted by Bon Secours volunteers.

Troop 3715 earns Bronze Award

Girl Scout Troop 3715, composed of fifth-grade girls from The Collegiate School, recently earned its Bronze Award – a leadership adventure and the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. Troop members are Emma Blackwood, Layla Brinster, Sarah Carrington, Caleigh Deane, Katie Dunn, Chandler Eddleton, Sarah Kate Gentry, Caroline Laskin, Caitlin Long, Gwen Lynch, Teresa Markiewicz and Avery Schebell. The troop donated 113 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to families who adopted pets from the Richmond SPCA and also made and donated more than 1,000 “happy socks” (cat toys constructed from socks stuffed with fiberfill and catnip) to the SPCA.

Black History Month celebration scheduled for Feb. 10 in Glen Allen

Henrico County will celebrate Black History Month with an afternoon of musical reflection, portrayals and historical interpretation beginning at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10 in the auditorium at The Academy at Virginia Randolph, 2204 Mountain Rd. in Glen Allen. Admission is free.

This program aims to highlight two anniversaries in the history of African Americans and the United States: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington. Opening the event will be musical selections offered by One Voice Chorus, a diverse community singing group.

Art, with spirit

The work of local artist KB Joseph is on display at The Daily Grind Coffee House and Café in Short Pump for a three-month period as part of owner Sam Jarrar's ongoing effort to spotlight the works and talents of local visual and musical artists.

Joseph, a James Madison University graduate, has won multiple awards for her work and publications in The Virginia Art Education Association Magazine and The Visual Arts Center of Richmond. Her style of movement and “hidden” imagery involves artistic movements such as futurism, cubism, abstract expressionism and even graffiti.

Nominate a local senior for Valentine’s Day Friendship and Cheer

Emeritus at Deep-Run, a senior living community in the west end, is seeking nominations for its Valentine’s Day Friendship and Cheer contest. A local senior, who otherwise would spend Valentine’s Day alone, will receive a free Valentine’s dinner at home with gifts and friends.

The Virginia Hemophilia Foundation’s 2017 VHF Trick or Trot 5K and Fun Walk will start at 9 a.m. at Robious Landing Park, Shelter 3, in Midlothian. There will be a 5K course, a quick one-mile route and the Monster Dash, a 100-yard fun run for kids 12 and under. Costumes are highly encouraged. A pre-race Halloween party will feature a DJ, food and more. Funds raised will go toward fulfilling VHF's mission of supporting the needs of those impacted by a bleeding disorder through education, advocacy, and community.
