Thanks in part to a $10,000 gift from the Western Henrico Rotary Club, another bright pink Jeep modified to travel extremely rough terrain has been delivered to Midwives For Haiti so that more pregnant women in the quake-ravaged country will have access to prenatal care and a greater chance of surviving childbirth.

The funds were raised at the annual casino night held in February, club president Adam Cherry said. The Rotary Club also helped purchase the Virginia-based charity’s first pink jeep three years ago.

“Midwives For Haiti is an outstanding local organization that does a tremendous job providing education and prenatal care and delivery assistance to women in Haiti," Cherry said. "This second vehicle will allow them to reach more people and make an even greater impact in Haiti.”

Haiti has the highest childbirth mortality rate in the Western Hemisphere. The lack of skilled attendants and limited access to quality care is at the root of the problems.

To improve maternal health, Midwives for Haiti trains Haitian women to provide prenatal care and deliver babies. It also teaches mothers how to provide better nutrition for infants and children, who are also at risk. The Jeeps, painted pink to match students’ scrubs, enable skilled birth attendants and students to offer mobile prenatal clinics at remote villages and to transport patients and supplies.
