National Night Out events planned tomorrow

Dozens of Henrico neighborhoods will participate in the annual National Night Out event tomorrow, Aug. 1, with cookouts, get-togethers and other events designed to unify communities in a fight against crime.

Nearly 80 neighborhoods have planned events, according to the Henrico Division of Police, which has compiled a list at http://henrico.us/assets/NNO_2017_Events_7.25.17.pdf.

National Night Out was created in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch and involved about 2.5 million people in 23 states. Today, the event involves nearly 40 million people and 16,000 communities nationwide. For details, visit https://natw.org/about.

Thanks to the NASA @ My Library program, the Glen Allen, Libbie Mill, North Park, Twin Hickory and Varina libraries will host free eclipse-viewing parties and distribute free eclipse-viewing classes while supplies last from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. A solar eclipse will occur that day. Henrico residents of all ages can learn about the science behind eclipses and pick up a pair of glasses to safely view the eclipse. Limited quantities of these safety glasses will be available to the public at all Henrico County Public Library locations, and distribution may be restricted to one pair of glasses per family if demand is overwhelming.
