Green Top Outdoor Expo starts Saturday


The Green Top Outdoor Expo will be held this weekend at the Green Top store, just north of Virginia Center Commons at 10150 Lakeridge Parkway in Ashland. The store, which is the largest independent hunting and fishing retailer on the East Coast, is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. The expo will feature factory representatives from more than 120 top sporting goods brands, an 80-gun raffle, seminars, product giveaways, family entertainment and more.

Pearce Memorial Scholarship Craft and Home Show scheduled for Oct. 7


The fourth-annual Gabriel Pearce Memorial Scholarship Craft and Home Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7, at The Berea Baptist Church, 15475 Ashland Road in Rockville. The event, hosted in memory of Pearce (pictured, inset), who was a 22-year-old Henrico County Sheriff's Deputy at the time of his death in a car accident in 2014, will feature vendors, crafters, children's activities and fair-style games, a bounce house, a silent auction, raffle items, live music and a hot food and a bake sale.

Lewis Ginter to host Fall PlantFest Sept. 15-16


Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s Fall PlantFest plant sale will take place Friday, Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Forty-two vendors will offer a variety of plants and garden/nature-related items for sale. Local Master Gardeners and volunteers also will be available to offer suggestions and answer questions.

Anthem LemonAid registration now open


Every week, a child is diagnosed with cancer in Central Virginia. In June 2015, Caroline Morris was one of them. Since then, she has been undergoing treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer, at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU.

Morris now only requires monthly visits to CHoR and is scheduled to be finished with her active treatment in August. Her blonde hair has grown back, after losing it as a side effect of chemotherapy, and her mom, Carla, is quick to express relief at the thought of getting “back to normal and not worrying so much.”

YMCA to offer free weekend access for teens this summer


The YMCA of Greater Richmond is bringing back its Totally Teen free summer memberships.

The membership allows teens ages 11-18 to use any Richmond-area YMCA for free Friday, Saturday and Sunday only during the summer. Last year, more than 6,000 teens signed up for the free summer membership. Registration is available online at ymcarichmond.org.

“We had no idea that Totally Teen would take off the way it did last summer and we are so happy to bring it back for another summer! said Tim Joyce, President and CEO for the YMCA of Greater Richmond.

Henrico NAACP to host public safety forum June 10

The Henrico NAACP will host a public safety forum at Henrico High School Saturday, June 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event is designed to inform attendees about how to engage and interact with public safety stakeholders.

Local gas prices virtually unchanged from last year

Gasoline demand is on the rise, but local drivers are paying just about the same for a gallon of unleaded gas as they did at this time last year.

While national gas prices are higher than they were at the same time last year, prices in the Richmond region fell by a penny, from $2.16 per gallon last June 4 to $2.15 per gallon this June 4, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.

Henrico school, businesses, organizations earn Active RVA awards

Active RVA hosted the fourth-annual RVA Awards May 17, recognizing organizations throughout the Richmond area that create a culture of daily physical activity and encourage active lifestyle.

During the event, Active RVA announced that it had given the Richmond region a grade of B- on its fitness scorecard.

The HHHunt Rivermill Project received the Active RVA Development Certification. Organizations were evaluated along five fundamental areas: space, connectivity, signage, amenities, and buildings. Active RVA presented its Infrastructure Award to the T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge, which recognizes a project with a positive impact on the active infrastructure of the region.
