Airport receives $4.5M runway construction grant


The Capital Region Airport Commission has received a $4.59-million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to fund the reconstruction of 3,600 feet of the existing Taxiway L runway, which has reached the end of its useful life.

Henrico planners hear input on future of Route 5 corridor


Protecting the beauty that exists along the Route 5 corridor should development arrive 20 to 30 years from now is big concern for many Varina residents.

On June 8, Henrico County planners hosted a community input open house at Varina Library to receive input about the Route 5 Corridor/Marion Hill Study. The study is a part of the Henrico County 2026 Comprehensive Plan. It focuses on an area 500 feet on either side of the center line of Route 5 for its 13.75-mile length through the Varina District.

Construction on Richmond-Henrico Turnpike bond referendum project to start next year
JUNE 14, 10 A.M. – Upgrades to the Richmond-Henrico Turnpike will cost $31.5 million, and revitalization projects valued at just under $7 million in the Laburnum gateway region and Highland Springs areas have been completed, the Henrico County Board of Supervisors learned Tuesday evening.

The board received an update on the progress of the Richmond-Henrico Turnpike and revitalization projects in a special work session before its regular meeting.

Norfolk man arrested at RIC after TSA catches him with gun

A Norfolk man was arrested at Richmond International Airport May 18 after Transportation Security Administration officers detected a loaded semi-automatic handgun in the traveler’s carry-on bag.

A TSA officer detected the .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun inside the man’s carry-on bag as it passed through the security checkpoint X-ray machine. The handgun was loaded with 13 bullets.

Virginia celebrating ‘Bike to Work Week’ this week


The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation is encouraging Virginians to participate in Bike to Work Week all week (May 15-19). The initiative is supported and recognized by Governor Terry McAuliffe. Bike to Work week encourages people to utilize biking as an alternative to driving alone to work.

“Bike to Work Week is an initiative for commuters to explore other travel options rather than congested roadways. It is also a great way to help ease commuter stress,” said Jennifer Mitchell, DRPT director.

Brook Road project to assist disabled residents

A project years in the making is beginning to make life easier for wheelchair-bound residents in Northern Henrico.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is completing a $2-million set of enhancements to the Brook Road corridor in front of St. Joseph's Villa and the Hollybrook Apartments, a community that is home to dozens of disabled residents.

Water system repairs to prompt lane closures Wednesday near Gayton, John Rolfe


Work to repair a leaking water main or valve will require lane closures beginning at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 22 near Gayton Road and John Rolfe Parkway.

Westbound Gayton’s left turning lane and left through lane will be closed. Westbound traffic will be shifted to the right through lane. Eastbound Gayton’s left through lane will be closed at John Rolfe. Eastbound traffic will be shifted to the right through lane.

JetBlue to double number of Richmond-Ft. Lauderdale flights


JetBlue Airways will add a second daily roundtrip between Richmond International Airport and Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to its summer schedule, effective June 15. The two markets were first connected by JetBlue in 2008.

With the addition of the second Ft. Lauderdale flight, JetBlue will now provide nonstop service between Richmond and Boston (four departures per day) and Orlando (twice-daily service) in addition to Ft. Lauderdale.

Man cited with gun at Richmond International Airport checkpoint


A man was cited on state weapons charges after he was stopped by Transportation Security Administration officers at the Richmond International Airport checkpoint last week when TSA officers detected a 9 mm handgun among his carry-on items.

TSA officers immediately contacted the Richmond International Airport Police, which responded, confiscated the gun and cited the man on a weapons charge. The man told TSA officials that he forgot that he was carrying his gun with him in his carry-on bag. It was not loaded.

Portion of Lakeside Avenue closed due to water main break


MAR. 3 – Crews have closed Lakeside Avenue between Maplewood Road and Spruce Street to make repairs to a broken water main.

Southbound traffic on Lakeside is being redirected to Maplewood, Hermitage Road and Dumbarton Road. Northbound traffic is being rerouted to Spruce, Club Road and Hilliard Road.

Section of Creighton Road to reopen Mar. 3 following bridge replacement


A half-mile section of Creighton Road east of Interstate 64 will reopen to through-traffic Friday, March 3, following installation of a two-lane bridge.

Creighton had been closed since May from Caddie Lane to Stone Dale Drive, near Glenwood Golf Club, while work was underway. Henrico County’s Department of Public Works replaced the one-lane bridge and improved the approaches to the new, wider bridge. The $3.45 million project was completed two months ahead of schedule.

Section of Francistown to be closed March 3-17 for storm sewer improvements

A section of Francistown Road, from Greenford Drive to Mapleview Avenue, will be closed March 3-17 for storm sewer improvements.

Motorists are encouraged to bypass the work zone by following Greenford, Alston Lane and Huron Avenue or Mapleview, Crystalwood Lane and Chumley Lane.

Section of Charles City Road to close beginning Feb. 26


A section of Charles City Road, from Lewis Road to South Airport Drive, will be closed beginning Sunday, Feb. 26 as part of a project to widen and improve the road.

The Henrico County Department of Public Works expects the closure to last for a few weeks.

Westbound traffic on Charles City will be detoured around the work zone by way of South Airport, Seven Hills Boulevard and Laburnum Avenue.

Virginia woman cited with gun at Richmond International Airport checkpoint


A Chesterfield County woman was cited on state weapons charges after she was stopped by Transportation Security Administration officers at the Richmond International Airport checkpoint Jan. 20 when TSA officers detected a .40-caliber handgun loaded with nine bullets, including one in the chamber of the gun.

TSA officers immediately contacted the Richmond International Airport Police, which responded, confiscated the gun and cited the woman, a resident of Chester.

Travelers are responsible for the belongings that they bring to a security checkpoint, and TSA’s advice to people is to look through bags thoroughly before coming to the airport to make sure there are no illegal or prohibited items.

Section of Virginia Road to close for a week

A portion of Virginia Road between Cole Boulevard and Lee Avenue will be closed to through traffic through approximately Thursday, Jan. 19 for the extension of sewer service to new home sites.

Residents of the affected area will be able to access their homes. Traffic will be detoured onto Richmond Avenue between Cole and Lee.
