Henrico to hold Oct. 19 workshop on Route 5 Corridor/Marion Hill Study


The Henrico County Planning Department will hold a workshop Thursday, Oct. 19 for residents and other members of the public to provide additional input for a study of the Route 5 corridor and Marion Hill areas.

The workshop will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at John Rolfe Middle School, 6901 Messer Road. The meeting will include an overview of community input received so far and an explanation of how it is reflected in the study’s draft goals and objectives.

Virginia woman caught with loaded gun at Richmond International Airport checkpoint


A New Kent County woman was stopped by Transportation Security Administration officers at the Richmond International Airport (RIC) checkpoint Nov. 30 when TSA officers detected a .380 caliber handgun among her carry-on items. The handgun was loaded with three bullets, including one in the chamber.

TSA officers immediately contacted the Richmond International Airport Police, which responded, confiscated the gun and issued a summons to the woman, a resident of Quinton.

Delta to add second daily roundtrip from Richmond to Minneapolis/St. Paul

Delta Air Lines will offer a second daily non-stop flight between Richmond International Airport and the airline’s Minneapolis/St. Paul hub beginning June 8.

The twice-daily flights will be operated by Delta Connection carrier ExpressJet Airlines on 69-seat CRJ-700 aircraft, which features first-class and economy seating.

‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign returns


November’s "Click It or Ticket" law enforcement campaign began Nov. 21, and state police officials are reminding motorists to buckle up before traveling for Thanksgiving – or for any other reason.

State and local police officers throughout Virginia will be on the lookout for unbelted motorists during the campaign, which concludes Dec. 4.Click It or Ticket combines high-visibility enforcement of seat belt and child safety seat laws with outreach and education.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seat belt users are 45 percent less likely to be fatally injured in a crash.

Mechanicsville woman dies in Henrico crash

A 52-year-old Mechanicsville woman died when the vehicle she was driving ran off Interstate 295 in northern Henrico and struck trees Nov. 20.

The driver, Nancy C. Lauff died at the scene. The crash occurred at about 7:10 a.m. at exit 43 on I-295 southbound. Lauff had exited onto the ramp to Route 1 but apparently did so at a high rate of speed, which caused her 2013 Toyota Yaris to run off the road to the right, where it struck the trees and overturned. Lauff was not wearing a seatbelt.

Police issued a Hanover County man two summonses on state weapons charges after he was stopped by Transportation Security Administration officers at the Richmond International Airport checkpoint Nov. 6 when TSA officers detected a 9 mm handgun among the man’s carry-on items.

The semi-automatic handgun was loaded with 15 bullets.

TSA officers immediately contacted the Richmond International Airport Police, which responded, confiscated the gun and issued the man, a resident of Ashland, Virginia, two summonses to appear in court.

Eastbound Three Chopt at Skipwith to be closed two weeks, beginning Nov. 9

Revised project schedule avoids impacts on voting
The eastbound lane of Three Chopt Road will be closed at Skipwith Road for about two weeks, beginning Wednesday, Nov. 9, for work on a city of Richmond gas line.

The closure will remain in effect from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday until work is complete. A detour will direct motorists from Three Chopt onto Skipwith, Forest Avenue, Glenside Drive and Horsepen Road.

Hermitage will be closed at railroad crossing Sept. 19-30 for improvements

Hermitage Road will be closed at its crossing of the CSX railroad from Monday, Sept. 19 through Friday, Sept. 30 for work to improve passenger and freight service in the area.

Motorists should consider using East Parham and Hilliard roads as alternate routes between Staples Mill and Woodman roads while access on Hermitage is restricted.

DMV 2 Go mobile offices coming to 2 Henrico locations


The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles’ five mobile customer service centers, called DMV 2 Go, are traveling across the state to serve customers. Each full service office provides all DMV transactions. Thanks to DMV’s partnerships with other government agencies, customers may also now purchase certified copies of Virginia birth, marriage, divorce, and death certificates, obtain E-ZPass transponders and apply for their hunting or fishing licenses on all five DMV mobile offices.

State Police offer tips during ‘Vehicle Theft Prevention Month’

Virginia State Police officials are reminding motorists during July – Vehicle Theft Prevention Month – never to leave their keys in their cars.

According to the 2015 Crime in Virginia report, 40 percent of the 8,103 motor vehicle thefts reported to VSP in 2015 occurred between June and September. July had the most motor vehicle thefts (909), with August (879), September (746) and June (721) following closely behind.

Nearly 90 Henrico roads closed by downed trees, power lines

JUNE 17, LAST UPDATED 7:57 P.M. – Downed trees and power lines are responsible for nearly 90 road closures throughout Henrico County in the aftermath of last night’s storms.

As of 4:10 p.m., more than 84,000 of the 146,000 Dominion Power customers in Henrico still were without power, and many may not get it back for several days. Henrico Police are directing traffic at 26 major intersections in the county. Other intersections at which traffic signals are not functional should be treated as four-way stops.

DRPT to host public meeting in Henrico about future of transit


The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, in cooperation with the Richmond Regional Transportation Planning Organization, will host a meeting June 7 in Henrico to address ways to improve public transit in the region.

Progress toward the implementation of the GRTC Pulse Bus Rapid Transit system has renewed the interest in public transport within the region.

Railroad improvements to close sections of Charles City, Miller roads May 24-25

Work to improve the CSX railroad in eastern Henrico County will close a portion of Charles City Road on Tuesday, May 24 and a stretch of Miller Road on Wednesday, May 25.

CSX Transportation expects each closure, which will include the railroad crossing, to last from about 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

On May 24, motorists on Charles City will be detoured around the work zone by way of Monahan Road, Darbytown Road and South Laburnum Avenue.
