International goals


A group of youth soccer players – most from Henrico – and local soccer coaches spent a week in Kazakhstan this month as part of a VCU Center for Sport Leadership program.

The group's trip to Astana, Kazakhstan was made possible by a $700,000 grant awarded to CSL Executive Director Carrie LeCrom by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs through its Sports Diplomacy Division.

Earnhardt gives Redskins a ride


Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the Hendrick Motorsports No. 88, stopped at Richmond Raceway Aug. 8 in advance of the track’s NASCAR weekend in September. He was joined by five players from the Washington Redskins, who were in town for the team's training camp, which concluded Aug. 14. The day in Richmond gave Earnhardt and the Redskins players an opportunity to see how the athletes compete in their respective sports.

Glen Allen wins 2 of first 3 games at 14U Babe Ruth World Series


The host Glen Allen 14-year-old all-star baseball team won two of its first three games in pool play at the 14-year-old Babe Ruth World Series, which is it hosting at RF&P Stadium in Glen Allen. The team beat the Midwest Plains champions, 9-4, in its first game Aug. 10, then topped the Southwest champions, 7-3, Aug. 11 before dropping a 5-4 result to the Ohio Valley champions.

Solar eclipse to impact region in one week


AUG. 14, 11:30 A.M. – The first cross-country solar eclipse since the advent of the automobile and creation of the free interstate system will be visible throughout much of the country next Monday, Aug. 21. In the Richmond region, most people will experience about 85 percent obstruction of sunlight when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun.

The event will begin at 1:18 p.m. local time and conclude at 4:03 p.m. During that time, looking at the sun without specially designed protective glasses could result in significant eye damage or even blindness.

Henrico to host youth baseball, senior softball championships this week


Henrico County will host a national championship in youth baseball and an international championship in senior softball in the coming week.

Beginning Thursday and continuing through Aug. 17, RF&P Park will host the Babe Ruth 14-year-old World Series, an event that will feature 13 teams from the United States and the host squad from Glen Allen.

Virginia celebrating Farmers’ Market Week this week


This week is Farmers' Market Week in Virginia, as proclaimed by Gov. Terry McAuliffe. The timing is appropriate, since many late summer crops statewide – including peaches, tomatoes and melons – are at their peak. Shoppers at farmers’ markets throughout the state also will find Virginia-grown Asian pears, butter beans, berries, cantaloupes, carrots, corn, cucumbers, eggplant, green beans, melons, nectarines, okra, onions, white and sweet potatoes, squash and more. A variety of non-produce products, such as eggs, herbs, honey, bread, plants and fresh-cut flowers.

Fan Appreciation Weekend to return to Richmond Raceway next month


Richmond Raceway will again host Fan Appreciation Weekend during its September NASCAR weekend. Like last year, fans will be showered with praise and thanks in numerous different ways, RR officials said.

“NASCAR fans are some of the greatest in all of sports, and we are very appreciative of all they do,” said Richmond President Dennis Bickmeier. “Without the fans, there would be no NASCAR. That’s why teams, drivers, and sponsors are joining us in saying ‘Thanks fans’ in September. Massage therapy students from ECPI University’s Richmond/Moorefield campus – including one from Henrico – have once again been invited by the Washington Redskins for the fifth straight year to provide massage therapy to players throughout the team’s three-week training camp in Richmond.

The Open University of The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond has announced its fall schedule of Lunch and Life speakers, open to those 50 and older.

The free four-week series is co-sponsored by St. Mary Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Road, where the series is held beginning at 12:30 p.m. each session. A bag lunch at noon, with beverages and dessert provided by the church, precedes the speakers.

Virginia's three-day tax-free holiday begins this Friday, Aug. 4, and continues through Sunday, Aug. 6. During the three-day event, the state sales tax is waived for qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items and Energy Star and WaterSense products.
