Airborne officers play key role in enforcement

Members of the Henrico Citizens Police Academy Alumni (pictured) got a rare peek at the “high” side of law enforcement recently, with a trip to the Metro Aviation Hangar adjacent to Richmond International Airport.

About 25 academy alumni gathered at the hangar July 11 to hear Officer Shaun McCarthy describe a typical day aloft - and some not so typical – in a Cessna owned by the Metro Aviation Unit.

Rock on!


The painted rocks craze is thriving in Henrico, as a walk around the grounds of local libraries and parks will demonstrate. This rock was spotted near Libbie Mill Library, and there's a slideshow of many more uniquely-painted stones on the RVA Rocks Facebook page (https://facebook.com/groups/RVARocks/).

Painting and hiding rocks is a family activity appropriate for all ages, and parents especially like the way it fosters creativity and gets kids outdoors.

Goochland man arrested at RIC with gun


A Goochland County man was arrested at Richmond International Airport July 19 after Transportation Security Administration officers found a loaded semi-automatic handgun in the traveler’s carry-on bag.

A TSA officer detected the 9 mm caliber handgun inside the man’s carry-on bag as it entered the security checkpoint X-ray machine. The handgun was loaded with 12 bullets.

Henrico to hold Aug. 3 community workshop on Route 5 Corridor/Marion Hill Study

The Henrico County Planning Department will hold a community workshop Thursday, Aug. 3 for residents and other members of the public to provide input for a study of the Route 5 corridor and Marion Hill areas. It will be the second such workshop held this summer to gather input.

Two Glen Allen all-star baseball teams win state titles



Two Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association all-star baseball teams recently won state championships.

The 9U team won the Cal Ripken League state title by defeating Manassas 7-2 in Williamsburg.

Airport receives $4.5M runway construction grant


The Capital Region Airport Commission has received a $4.59-million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to fund the reconstruction of 3,600 feet of the existing Taxiway L runway, which has reached the end of its useful life.

Bon Secours establishes new midwifery practice at St. Mary’s Hospital


Bon Secours Richmond OB-GYN, an obstetrics and gynecology provider of Bon Secours Richmond Health System, recently established a midwifery practice at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital. Three nurse-midwives will provide 24/7 midwifery care to women and their families. It is the first midwifery practice of its kind in the West End.

Certified nurse-midwives are registered nurses with master’s degrees, post-master’s training and board certification by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. They will work with physicians at Richmond OB-GYN, including Alice Hirata, M.D. and Sarah Peterson, M.D., in a collaborative manner.

Whitley’s Peanut Factory to open Glen Allen store


Whitley's Peanut Factory will open its third retail location – and its first in the Richmond region – early this fall in Innsbrook.

The store will be located at 4101 Dominion Boulevard in Glen Allen and will operate from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, with extended holiday hours.

Fire engulfs Eastern Henrico home


JULY 13, 5 P.M. – Six people were hospitalized following a fire that engulfed a home in Eastern Henrico Thursday morning.

At about 9:25 a.m., Henrico Fire officials received several calls about the fire in the 2500 block of Charles City Road, near Richmond International Airport.

Richmond Raceway planning $30M infield makeover


JULY 11, 6:31 P.M. – Richmond International Raceway today announced a $30-million redevelopment project and unveiled a new name – Richmond Raceway – and logo.

Richmond Raceway Reimagined is set to be unveiled Sept. 21-22, 2018 during Richmond Raceway’s first NASCAR playoff weekend. The project will provide a completely redesigned and modernized infield to immerse race fans more than ever.

Both practical and spiritual, Pastor Douglas Crockett of Highland Springs United Methodist Church is not only a pastor but a practicing attorney. Both aspects are constantly at work, whether he's preaching to his congregation or helping his clients at his own law practice.

Crockett grew up worshiping Baptist at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in his hometown of Ivanhoe, Va. While studying at Emory and Henry College, he became acquainted with the United Methodist Church on campus and met his wife Rita, who is United Methodist.

Henrico students take honors in Peace Center essay contest

Nine Henrico students wrote essays that were honored for their excellence in the Richmond Peace Education Center’s annual Peace Essay Contest, in which more than 560 students from across Virginia submitted essays.

The theme of the contest was Many People…One Nation. Students were asked to consider how best to build understanding and mutual respect among people of different heritages and beliefs. They wrote about what they could do to help build a community from people of many different backgrounds, and how to help promote respect and understanding among all communities and across the nation.

HCPS seeking nutrition workers, bus drivers at July 12 job fair


Henrico County Public Schools will host a job fair Wednesday, July 12 to talk with candidates for full-time and substitute school nutrition workers and bus drivers. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Community Room at the Eastern Henrico Government Center, 3820 Nine Mile Road.
