Henrico Master Gardener training program accepting applications through Oct. 27


The Henrico County Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension is accepting applications for its next volunteer Master Gardener training program, which provides instruction in all aspects of horticulture.

Applications for the 2018 training program will be accepted through Friday, Oct. 27. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Jan. 16 through March 22.

Henrico Police to participate in ‘Tip a Cop’ Oct. 21


Henrico County Police Division and the Virginia Division of Capitol Police are participating in “Tip-A-Cop” to Support the Special Olympics Saturday, Oct. 21.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. that day at Red Robin, 11784 West Broad Street, members of the two agencies will be working for tips as a donation to the Special Olympics.

Fairfield meeting Oct. 25 to focus on cybersecurity


Henrico County Board of Supervisors Vice Chairman and Fairfield District Supervisor Frank J. Thornton will hold a constituent meeting Wednesday, Oct. 25 to discuss cybersecurity.

Thornton also has invited candidates who will be seeking election to local offices on Tuesday, Nov. 7 to introduce themselves.

Henrico Library’s Summer Reading Club Begins

Whether you’re a child, teen, or adult you probably enjoy cracking open a good book every now and then.

This summer, the Henrico County Public Library is inviting community members of all ages to do just that by participating in the annual Summer Reading Club, which began June 1.

Library cardholders can sign up online to log the reading that they do between June 1 and Aug. 31.

Henrico recognizes ‘legacy’ businesses

Vittorio Capocelli’s brother, Mario, began suffering from kidney failure in 1965. Mario needed a kidney transplant, but one of the best transplant doctors at the time, Dr. David Hume, was located in Richmond – approximately 4,500 miles from their home in Rome, Italy.

Vittorio and his family decided to pack up and travel to Richmond so that Mario could be treated by Hume, who had helped perform the very first kidney transplant in 1954 at Peter Ben Brigham Hospital.

Henrico’s ‘NASA @ My Library’ program begins this summer

A new partnership with NASA will begin this summer at all Henrico County public libraries.

Each library will receive resources from the NASA @ My Library program, although the Central, Eastern Henrico, Libbie Mill and Varina libraries will receive more, since they are more equipped to deal with large scale programs. The program is designed to make it easier for Henrico residents in low-income areas to access STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education and learning opportunities.

Henrico to hold June 8 open house on Route 5 Corridor/Marion Hill study

The Henrico County Planning Department will hold an open house Thursday, June 8 for residents and other members of the public to provide input for a study of the Route 5 Corridor/Marion Hill areas.

The open house will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Varina Area Library, 1875 New Market Road. The meeting’s informal structure will allow the public to attend at their convenience and to ask questions and discuss the study one on one with Planning staff.

Smither named director of Henrico’s Department of Finance

Henrico County Manager John A. Vithoulkas has appointed Edward N. “Ned” Smither Jr. to serve as director of the Department of Finance, effective July 1.

Smither has served Henrico since 2013 as director of the Accounting Division in Finance. He will succeed Eugene H. Walter, who has delayed his retirement until June 30 to ensure an orderly transition within the department.

Review of state voting records finds minor impact

For years, Republicans have loudly proclaimed that voter fraud is widespread in U.S. elections – and just as adamantly, Democrats have insisted that such allegations are nonsense.

Last fall, a pair of groups supported by conservatives released a report with the sensational title “Alien Invasion in Virginia: The discovery and coverup of noncitizen registration and voting.” It said illegal voting is a “massive problem”:

“In our small sample of just eight Virginia counties who responded to our public inspection requests, we found 1,046 aliens who registered to vote illegally,” the study said.

Tuckahoe District Supervisor Patricia S. O’Bannon will host a Tuckahoe Town Meeting on Wednesday, May 24 to discuss the opioid epidemic that is affecting individuals and families in Henrico County.

The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Tuckahoe Area Library, 1901 Starling Drive. Residents are welcome to attend or watch via a live stream on YouTube.

Henrico Recreation and Parks to host summer job fair May 18


Henrico Recreation and Parks will host a summer job fair on Thursday, May 18 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Deep Run Recreation Center, 9910 Ridgefield Parkway.

The agency is hiring for a variety of camp jobs that involve no nights or weekends. New hires will spend the summer leading kids in games, arts and crafts, sports, nature activities and more. Positions include recreation instructors and coordinators.

Women in Law Enforcement information session to be held May 18


Henrico County Division of Police will hold a Women in Law Enforcement orientation program May 18 at 6 p.m. at the Training Center, 7701 East Parham Road.

The event, which is geared towards women interested in careers in police or dispatch, will begin promptly at 6 with a presentation outlining opportunities, the application process, qualifications, benefits, academy, and field training.

Resource Workforce Center to celebrate grand opening in Chesterfield


The Capital Region Workforce Partnership and the Capital Region Workforce Development Board will celebrate the new location of the partnership's workforce center in Chesterfield County with a grand opening and open house Friday, May 19.

The Chesterfield Resource Workforce Center has relocated to 304 Turner Road, off Midlothian Turnpike, west of Chippenham Parkway.

Henrico Library wins one of 75 NASA grants for STEM education


Henrico County Public Library is one of 75 library systems nationally – and the only one in Virginia – selected from a pool of 513 applicants to win funding for STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs through the NASA @ My Library project, library officials announced May 4.

The grant supplies training, materials, and funding for HCPL libraries for 18 months in Phase 1, and through 2020 in Phase 2, to increase youth participation in STEM activities at the library.

Henrico County Crisis Intervention Team honored by National Alliance on Mental Illness

Members of the Henrico County Crisis Intervention Team and other county mental health employees were recognized by the Central Virginia branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness for their work to strengthen mental health services to the community.

Eight employees of Henrico were among those honored April 20 at the NAMI-CVA annual awards banquet in Richmond.
