Henrico teen turns tragedy into hope

Project to honor late brother takes flight

FEB. 22, 12:15 P.M. – When Christopher Sims, a 14-year-old Henrico boy, died by suicide two years ago, it left a family and an entire community off kilter, searching for answers.

For months afterwards, his twin brother, Alexander, listened to their mother describe how she wished something positive might come from the tragedy.

So Alexander Sims, a junior at Mills E. Godwin High School, decided to create a kindness program to combat bullying and teen suicide. He named it “Christopher’s Angels” (in honor of his brother) and launched it Feb. 9 – on the second anniversary of Christopher's death – at http://www.christophersangels.org.

HCPS launches student-created iPhone app


Henrico County Public Schools has launched an app of its HCPSLink academic web portal for parents and students – and the new iPhone software was created by a student.

The new mobile app provides students in grades 6-12 and their parents “a quick, easy, lightweight way to stay connected with student grades and assignments,” said HCPS Director of Technology Pete Taylor. “It’s easy to use and aesthetically pleasing.” The app is free, and available at the Apple App Store by searching “HCPS.”

Godwin students learn ‘rule of law’ from bar association

Students at Godwin High School recently learned how the law applies to them and how it forms the basis of behavior within a society, through an interactive experience called the Rule of Law, presented Oct. 10 by the Henrico County Bar Association.

The program is designed to spotlight the role of law as the foundation for communities of opportunity and equity; its goal is to teach young people to understand and appreciate the foundational principles embedded in the rule of law, without which democracy cannot exist.

Part Two of Henrico’s Ambassador Program for Seniors (HAPS) will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Eastern Henrico Recreation Center, 1440 N. Laburnum Ave. (HAPS) is a free, bi-annual program open to adults 55 or older. The program is broken into two parts and is designed to give residents the tools they need to navigate services for older adults in Henrico. Both programs feature different speakers.
