Free weekly 5k coming to Henrico

The Richmond metro area is no stranger to 5k races and events. To participate in most 5k events, runners must register and pay a fee. But the Parkrun organization will be providing Henrico County with a free 5k every Saturday at Deep Run Park starting June 3.

Parkrun began in England in 2004 and eventually found its way to the U.S.

The Deep Run Parkrun program will be the 10th one in the U.S., said Darrell Stanaford, the country manager for Parkrun USA.

Henrico to hold June 8 open house on Route 5 Corridor/Marion Hill study

The Henrico County Planning Department will hold an open house Thursday, June 8 for residents and other members of the public to provide input for a study of the Route 5 Corridor/Marion Hill areas.

The open house will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Varina Area Library, 1875 New Market Road. The meeting’s informal structure will allow the public to attend at their convenience and to ask questions and discuss the study one on one with Planning staff.

Henrico real estate staying strong despite low inventory

The Henrico real estate market has been relatively strong for the past month, despite a lower amount of inventory, according to data from Long and Foster Real Estate.

In the past month, 408 homes have been sold in Henrico, which is 2 percent less than were sold in the same timeframe in 2016.

Last year the median sale prices for Henrico homes was $219,975, whereas this month it's up to $232,500, a 6 percent increase. Which means half of the homes in Henrico are priced above $232,500 and half are priced below.

Political parties at odds over voter ID laws


Voter identification laws are a hot issue in Virginia and across the country. Republicans say such laws combat voter fraud, which they insist is widespread. Democrats say the laws discourage voting by minority and elderly citizens who may be less likely to have a photo ID.

The debate has played out in Virginia, where Republicans control the General Assembly and a Democrat is governor, with few signs of a compromise.

Henrico Recreation and Parks to host summer job fair May 18


Henrico Recreation and Parks will host a summer job fair on Thursday, May 18 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Deep Run Recreation Center, 9910 Ridgefield Parkway.

The agency is hiring for a variety of camp jobs that involve no nights or weekends. New hires will spend the summer leading kids in games, arts and crafts, sports, nature activities and more. Positions include recreation instructors and coordinators.

Women in Law Enforcement information session to be held May 18


Henrico County Division of Police will hold a Women in Law Enforcement orientation program May 18 at 6 p.m. at the Training Center, 7701 East Parham Road.

The event, which is geared towards women interested in careers in police or dispatch, will begin promptly at 6 with a presentation outlining opportunities, the application process, qualifications, benefits, academy, and field training.

School Board modifies one redistricting option, schedules June 8 input session


The Henrico School Board last week decided to replace one middle school redistricting option with a modified version and scheduled a new community input session for June 8. The board is expected to make a final decision on the middle school redistricting changes at its monthly meeting on June 22.

Any final plan adopted by the board would take effect for the 2018-19 school year. The redistricting process will not affect current middle or high school students.

Virginia celebrating ‘Bike to Work Week’ this week


The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation is encouraging Virginians to participate in Bike to Work Week all week (May 15-19). The initiative is supported and recognized by Governor Terry McAuliffe. Bike to Work week encourages people to utilize biking as an alternative to driving alone to work.

“Bike to Work Week is an initiative for commuters to explore other travel options rather than congested roadways. It is also a great way to help ease commuter stress,” said Jennifer Mitchell, DRPT director.

Henrico Police to host annual memorial service May 16


The Henrico County Police Division will host its annual police memorial service May 16 to honor members who died in the line of duty. The event will be held at 6 p.m. at the Police Memorial Park, at the Henrico County Western Government Center, 4301 East Parham Road. The public is invited to attend.

AAA Mid-Atlantic has opened a new AAA Car Care Insurance Travel Center at the intersection of Broad Street and Glenside at 7009 W. Broad St. The new location joins the auto club’s four other Virginia locations (Midlothian, Fredericksburg, Manassas and Fairfax) and replaces the previous Willow Lawn location. Store hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Glenside Car Care Insurance Travel Center offers car care services to members and non-members, although AAA members will enjoy a lower price with a discount on repair labor.

Several items were taken during a breaking and entering in the 4600 Block of Jefferson Davis Highway.

No one injured by Far West End house fire


MAY 12, 2:30 P.M. – No one was injured during a fire at a home in Henrico's Far West End Friday morning.

The fire broke out shortly before 7:30 a.m. in the 13400 block of Elwell Lane, near North Gayton Road. An occupant of the house reported tha smoke was coming from the attic. Firefighters from Station 13 were on scene within three minutes and met by the occupants, who told them that everyone had escaped the home.

Sandston Founders Club members reminisce about early years

A relentless rain may have dampened the turnout, but it failed to dampen enthusiasm as members of the Sandston Founders Club came together April 22 for their 13th annual meeting.

About 50 members and guests gathered at the Sandston Memorial Recreation Center to pore over old photos, discuss historical and preservation projects, catch up on each other’s news – and, of course, reminisce.

IR Engraving to expand operations in Henrico


IR Engraving, a leader in designing and building engraved rolls and plates, gravure rolls and custom machinery, will invest $850,000 to expand its manufacturing operation in Henrico County to meet increased demand, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and the company announced May 10. The project also will create 22 new jobs.

“We are excited at the opportunities available since we acquired the business from Standex last summer, returning the company to its privately-held roots,” said IR Engraving President Matthew Pursel.
