Open house to be held Sept. 19

MedExpress Urgent Care will open a new neighborhood medical center in Henrico Sept. 20 at 8040 W. Broad St. To help Richmond-area residents prepare for the upcoming flu season, the new center will offer free flu shots to patients ages four and up starting the day the center opens and while supplies last.

An open house celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held prior to opening day, Sept. 19 from noon to 2 p.m.

Crime Stoppers’ Crime of the Week: Sept. 18, 2017

Crime Stoppers is seeking information about a shooting in Richmond that resulted in an injured child and the murder of an adult.

At approximately 10:21 p.m., Sept. 9, Richmond Police were called to the 3200 block of 5th Avenue for a report of a person shot. They quickly located two victims suffering from gunshot wounds, a 57-year-old male and a 9-year-old female.

AAA: Gas prices in Virginia could jump 15-25 cents per gallon in Harvey aftermath

Gas prices in Virginia could jump as much as 15 to 25 cents per gallon – or more – within 10 days as the result of Hurricane Harvey's impact in Texas, AAA Mid-Atlantic officials are warning.

Locally, the average cost of a gallon of regular unleaded gas has risen two cents to $2.16 since Monday, according to AAA.

Henrico County Board of Supervisors Chairman and Tuckahoe District Supervisor Patricia S. O’Bannon will host a Tuckahoe Town Meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 13 to address cybercrime.

UMFS, Charterhouse School to host career fair Tuesday

Nonprofit social service organization UMFS is planning to hire more than 20 people for a variety of positions at its West Broad Street headquarters and will host a career fair Aug. 29 from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

UMFS, located at 3900 W. Broad Street, provides a comprehensive array of programs for high-risk children and families. Its Charterhouse School provides special education for students with autism and other neurological differences, learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities and emotional challenges.

2 dead, 1 injured in Highland Springs shooting

Two people died in a weekend shooting in Highland Springs and a third was injured in the incident.

Henrico Police identified the two deceased victims as 31-year-old Lakisha L. Lewis and 32-year-old Devon L. Blowe, both of Richmond.

Organizers of the second-annual 'Mission Tomorrow' – a regional interactive career exploration event for middle school students – are seeking businesses and organizations to exhibit at the event, which will be held Nov. 1-2 at Richmond Raceway Complex. The event is expected to draw 12,000 eighth-graders.

Organizers are seeking more than 100 exhibitors to provide students with brief, fun, engaging experiences as they explore various career options.

Henrico Police charge Chesterfield man in April murder of Henrico teen

Henrico Police have arrested and charged 20-year-old Roger Craig Brown III, of Chesterfield, with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of a 16-year-old Henrico boy April 11 near Montrose Elementary School in Eastern Henrico.

Virginia SCC encourages citizens to review insurance policies prior to hurricane season

As Hurricane Harvey barrels toward landfall in Texas, the Virginia State Corporation Commission’s Bureau of Insurance is reminding Virginians to take stock of their insurance policies to protect their properties from loss should a hurricane or tropical storm impact the state.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially began June 1 and runs through Nov. 30, but late August to early October typically is the most active and dangerous time for tropical cyclone activity.

Richmond Raceway to premiere e-sports tournament Sept. 9

Richmond Raceway will host the first NASCAR Heat 2 video game competition with a 64-person tournament prior to the Federated Auto Parts 400 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race Sept. 9, track officials announced this week. Participants will try their luck at the Xbox One version of the game with prizes awarded to the highest scoring players. NASCAR’s official video game licensee – 704Games – and GameStop and Aaron’s are joining with RR during Fan Appreciation Weekend to offer gamers a chance to see and play the game before its public release Sept. 12.

Quioccasin Road bridge demolition to begin Monday

A series of road improvements associated with a redevelopment project at the Regency Square shopping mall began this week and will impact traffic along Quioccasin and North Parham roads during the next 12 months.

The first phase of work will include the demolition of the Quioccasin Road bridge, which provides access to the mall property west of Parham. Demolition will begin Monday.
