Varina HS students help to map Hollywood Cemetery


Varina High School geospatial technology students spent Halloween taking GPS readings of graves at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond - efforts that will assist in creating a searchable web-based map of the famed cemetery.

Hollywood Cemetery is a “garden” cemetery recognized as one of the most beautiful and historic cemeteries in America with 135 acres of sprawling hills and trees. As the second-most visited cemetery in the nation, behind only Arlington National Cemetery in Northern Virginia, Hollywood brings visitors from all across the country.

Varina High School celebrating ‘Michael Robinson Spirit Day’

For Varina High School students and staff, the 2014 Super Bowl is personal. The school will celebrate “Michael Robinson Spirit Day” Friday, in honor of the Seattle Seahawks Pro Bowl fullback, who is a 2001 Varina graduate.

The school is encouraging students and staff to wear Seahawks gear, or the team’s green, navy and silver colors. Bobby Ukrop, president and CEO of Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods, donated cookies in Seahawks colors for the celebration. There are also two large good-luck banners for students to sign.

Varina HS celebrates 50 years at site

On May 5, 1963, at 3 p.m., officials of Varina High School dedicated their brand new school on Messer Road.

Exactly 50 years later, on May 5, 2013, at 3 p.m., VHS officials and community members will again congregate on Messer Road to dedicate the school and celebrate their sparkling new surroundings – courtesy of a three-year, $30-million renovation project of the facility and grounds.

The Henrico County Planning Department will hold a workshop from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at John Rolfe Middle School, 6901 Messer Rd., for residents and other members of the public to provide additional input for a study of the Route 5 corridor and Marion Hill areas. The meeting will include an overview of community input received so far and an explanation of how it is reflected in the study’s draft goals and objectives. The presentation will be followed by an exercise that will allow attendees to express their opinions about the draft goals and objectives. Participants will use electronic keypads to register their opinions, and results for the group will be displayed on-screen in real time. Participants also will be asked to provide feedback about a restroom facility that is planned at the Four Mile Creek Park trailhead.
