Capital One sponsors ‘Coders Experience’


Capital One hosted its “Coders Experience” event in Richmond and a number of other state locations Oct. 14. The events attracted hundreds of middle school girls, who learned how to create their own mobile apps, hone problem-solving skills and gain software development knowledge. A second day of Coders Experience events will take place Oct. 21. More than 500 Capital One volunteers are participating in the 10 events.

The award is a partnership between Virginia Business magazine and the Virginia Society of Association Executives. JCPenney to hire more than 1,000 seasonal workers in Virginia

Hiring event planned Oct. 17

Retailer JCPenney plans to hire more than 1,000 seasonal employees in Virginia (and a total of 40,000 nationwide) and will host a hiring event at all of itslocations nationwide Tuesday, Oct. 17, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., company officials announced this week. Available customer service and support positions include cashier, replenishment specialist, Sephora inside JCPenney beauty consultant and others.

Henrico-based brand merchandising company NewClients, Inc. has changed its name to Boost Promotional Branding.

Henrico Doctors’ Hospital recently was recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a Best Hospital for colon cancer surgery for 2017-18. The annual Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 28th year, are part of U.S. News’ patient portal, designed to help patients make informed decisions about where to receive care for life-threatening conditions or for common elective procedures. For the 2017-18 rankings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. In the 16 specialty areas, 152 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals as high performing across multiple areas of care.

Inaugural issue of the Henrico Health Guide publishes


T3 Media, LLC, the parent company of the Henrico Citizen, has published its inaugural edition of the Henrico Health Guide, a resource that includes a comprehensive list of hundreds of health, medical and wellness-related businesses and offices in Henrico County, along with phone numbers, addresses and websites for most. The magazine also includes a look at new technological and treatment advances currently in use by Henrico health and wellness professionals.

Brazilian firm to locate in Innsbrook


AUG. 11, 3:15 P.M. – CTA Plus, a Brazilian-based company focused on transport systems, will open its North American headquarters in Innsbrook, with a new American brand called Link2pump. The Greater Richmond Partnership made the announcement today.

The company plans to hire five employees within a year and invest as much as $350,000.

Next Publix to open Aug. 19


Another Publix store will open in Henrico County Saturday, Aug. 19. The store, a former Martin's located at 2250 John Rolfe Parkway in the Far West End, will open at 7 a.m. that day. It will become the county's fourth Publix, joining a new store at 5400 Wyndham Forest Drive in Glen Allen, and two refurbished Martin's stores, at 10250 Staples Mill Road in Glen Allen and 4591 S. Laburnum Avenue in Eastern Henrico, the latter of which opened Aug. 5.

The Express Employment Professionals, Richmond (North) office held an event on July 21, 2017 to raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer care at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. The total of almost $800 that was raised included online donations from their clients, and lemonade sales at their office as part of the Anthem LemonAid / Children’s Miracle Network charity event. The Richmond (North) Express Employment Professionals franchise began operation in 1996 and serves Hanover, Henrico, New Kent and King William counties in a variety of fields in administrative, finance, engineering and commercial temporary help and direct hire employees. The office is located at 827 E. Parham Rd. in Henrico and is currently accepting applications.

Second Henrico Publix opening this weekend


The second Publix store in Henrico – and the first local Martin's location to have undergone a transition to Publix – will open this weekend.

The store at The Shoppes at Crossridge, 10250 Staples Mill Road in Glen Allen, will open at 7 a.m. July 29. Publix recently opened its first location in the state on Nuckols Road in Henrico. Next week, the third Publix in the county – at White Oak Village, 4591 South Laburnum Avenue in Eastern Henrico – will reopen after its transition.

Dairy Queen’s Blizzard sales July 27 to benefit Children’s Hospital of Richmond


Dairy Queen’s 13th Annual Miracle Treat Day – Thursday, July 27 – will raise fund to benefit sick and injured children being treated at Children's Miracle Network hospitals throughout the United States. Locally, $1 or more from every Blizzard Treat sold at participating locations will be donated to the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU. Last year, the event raised more than $14,400 for the hospital.

For the ninth year in a row, Puritan Cleaners is conducting a one-day-only community program that offers everyone in Richmond a free cleaning of one pair of pants. The event, called Free Pants Wednesday, will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 2. The offer is good at all 13 Puritan locations throughout the greater Richmond area with no strings attached. There are no minimums or other stipulations (other than suede and leather pants are excluded). This year, Puritan has partnered with the Richmond SPCA to help raise awareness for the Free Pants Wednesday program while also raising awareness for homeless kittens awaiting adoption at the Richmond SPCA’s humane center. The two organizations collaborated on a short movie which can be viewed at http://www.puritancleaners.com/community/free-pants-wednesday. This video is the latest in the light-hearted, low-budget, and intentionally campy videos associated with the Free Pants Wednesday program. Previous versions have featured racing at Richmond Raceway, ex-VCU basketball coach Shaka Smart, Todd “Parney” Parnell and the Flying Squirrels, and Bill Bevins and Shelly Perkins of Easy 100.9.
