Henrico serves criminal summonses against Essex Village management


Henrico County has obtained 11 criminal summonses against PK Management, which manages Essex Village, for violations at the northern Henrico property, a county official said Tuesday evening.

Nine summonses were served Tuesday, two more are pending, and the county will seek four more by the end of the week, Building Official Greg Revels said.

New GRASP scholarships to aide winners with college debt and costs


Fifteen Henrico County Public Schools students recently received a “2+2” scholarship from the non-profit organization GRASP (GReat Aspirations Scholarship Program, Inc.). In total, the newly created scholarships will help 71 students receive their baccalaureate degrees from a Virginia college or university with lower costs and less student debt.

The scholarship awards each winner $1,000 for his or her first year at a community college to cover the costs not covered by financial aid, such as books and computers.

Long & Foster’s Innsbrook, Short Pump offices participate in community service day event


Thousands of real estate agents and employees with Long & Foster Real Estate, including those at the Innsbrook and Short Pump offices in Glen Allen, Virginia, took part in the company’s 20th annual Community Service Day June 7.

The Innsbrook and Short Pump offices chose to volunteer with Housing Families First on June 7. The organization’s mission provides families experiencing homelessness with what they need to move to a stable housing situation.

CARITAS to open recovery program for women


CARITAS, a nonprofit that strives to end homelessness, plans to start a long-term recovery program for women in Richmond after the success of its program for men, The Healing Place. The women’s facility is tentatively scheduled to open in late 2017 or early 2018.

In the midst of what federal and state officials call an opioid epidemic, the new program will allow CARITAS to offer residential treatment for addiction to Richmond-area women for the first time.

Construction on Richmond-Henrico Turnpike bond referendum project to start next year
JUNE 14, 10 A.M. – Upgrades to the Richmond-Henrico Turnpike will cost $31.5 million, and revitalization projects valued at just under $7 million in the Laburnum gateway region and Highland Springs areas have been completed, the Henrico County Board of Supervisors learned Tuesday evening.

The board received an update on the progress of the Richmond-Henrico Turnpike and revitalization projects in a special work session before its regular meeting.

Witte wins Republican nomination for Brookland supervisor’s seat

JUNE 13, 10:30 P.M. – Brookland District Planning Commissioner Bob Witte will be the Republican Party’s nominee to fill the Brookland District seat on the county’s Board of Supervisors.

Voters in the Republican primary election district today selected Witte (51 percent) over Benjamin Dessart (40 percent) and Gilbert Wilkerson, Sr. (8 percent). Witte will face Democratic nominee Courtney Lynch in the November general election, with the winner filling the final two years of late supervisor Dick Glover’s four-year term.

Henrico voters also helped determine party nominees in several Virginia House of Delegates districts and for the statewide offices of governor and lieutenant governor.

Crime Stoppers needs your help to solve a double homicide in the City of Richmond.

On Wednesday, June 7, at approximately 9:53 p.m., officers received calls for random gunfire in the 3600 block of Decatur Street. They arrived and found the bodies of Christian Singleton and Ketron Wells outside on the ground lying near each other. They had both been shot.

Parr named Henrico Social Services director


Henrico County Manager John A. Vithoulkas has appointed Ty F. Parr to serve as director of the Department of Social Services, effective June 24.

Parr has served Henrico Social Services as its Children’s Services Act coordinator since 2014. He will succeed Cynthia J. Steinhauser, who is retiring after serving as director since 2012.

Henrico wins National Association of Counties awards for 28 programs


Henrico County departments and agencies recently earned 28 Achievement Awards from the National Association of Counties for innovative programs, with two also recognized in the new 100 Brilliant Ideas at Work category.

The County Manager’s Office received an Achievement Award and a 100 Brilliant Ideas at Work honor for an initiative to offer virtual town halls. The effort, led by Board of Supervisors Chairman Patricia S. O’Bannon, of the Tuckahoe District, allows residents to watch and participate in public meetings via a live stream over the internet.
