Earnhardt gives Redskins a ride


Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the Hendrick Motorsports No. 88, stopped at Richmond Raceway Aug. 8 in advance of the track’s NASCAR weekend in September. He was joined by five players from the Washington Redskins, who were in town for the team's training camp, which concluded Aug. 14. The day in Richmond gave Earnhardt and the Redskins players an opportunity to see how the athletes compete in their respective sports.

READ Center a finalist for $25k grant


The READ Center is a top-200 cause finalist in State Farm’s Neighborhood Assist program, making it eligible to earn a $25,000 grant to support adult literacy in the Richmond region. The 40 organizations from across the nation with the most votes will win grants.

The READ Center, based in Henrico, provides classroom instruction and one-to-one tutoring to adults with very low literacy.

Massage therapy students from ECPI University’s Richmond/Moorefield campus – including one from Henrico – have once again been invited by the Washington Redskins for the fifth straight year to provide massage therapy to players throughout the team’s three-week training camp in Richmond.

“This opportunity provides real-life sports massage scenarios that will be of tremendous benefit to our students,” said ECPI University Richmond/Moorefield Campus President Ashley Richards.

Shepherd’s Center announces fall ‘Lunch and Life’ series speakers


The Open University of The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond has announced its fall schedule of Lunch and Life speakers, open to those 50 and older.

The free four-week series is co-sponsored by St. Mary Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Road, where the series is held beginning at 12:30 p.m. each session. A bag lunch at noon, with beverages and dessert provided by the church, precedes the speakers.

Henrico Police charge man with murdering woman in West End


AUG. 2, 11:10 A.M. – A 33-year-old Henrico man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of a woman last night.

At about 11 p.m., Henrico Police arrested responded to a residence in the 1300 block of Westridge Road in the Farmington subdivision near Pinchbeck Elementary School, following reports of a shooting.

Henrico earns VACo awards for 4 programs


Henrico County general government departments and offices, as well as Henrico County Public Schools, recently were honored by the Virginia Association of Counties for four initiatives representing excellence in local services.

VACo recognized 17 programs in its 2017 Achievement Awards competition among 79 entries submitted by member counties across the state. Henrico and Chesterfield counties collected four awards apiece, more than any other county.

Gas prices locally well below national average

But prices no longer dropping

The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas in the Richmond region this week is $2.08 – one cent less than the statewide average and 24 cents less than the national average, according to AAA.

The national average is at its highest price since June 15 and has increased during 12 of the past 15 days.

Positive rabies case reported in Varina

A skunk that encountered a dog in Varina July 30 has tested positive for rabies, according to Henrico Police officials.

Henrico Police Animal Protection responded to the 8200 block of Varina Road Sunday after a family dog cornered the skunk on the back deck of a residence.

Virginia's three-day tax-free holiday begins this Friday, Aug. 4, and continues through Sunday, Aug. 6. During the three-day event, the state sales tax is waived for qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items and Energy Star and WaterSense products.

Henrico man dies in motorcycle crash


A 42-year-old Henrico man died when the motorcycle he was driving crashed in the 200 block of East Richmond Road July 30 at about 5:25 p.m.

Jason Tyrone Carter was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Henrico Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and are looking for another vehicle believed to be involved.

The Express Employment Professionals, Richmond (North) office held an event on July 21, 2017 to raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer care at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. The total of almost $800 that was raised included online donations from their clients, and lemonade sales at their office as part of the Anthem LemonAid / Children’s Miracle Network charity event.
